Steven went to medical at the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine (1986-1990) and graduated magna cum laude. He then did his medical internship at Wellesley Hospital in Toronto, Canada (1990-1991) His ophthalmology residency was done at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (1991-1994).

Steven has done several ophthalmology fellowships including Glaucoma at the University of Illinois, Oculoplastics at the University of British Columbia, Medical Retina at the University of British Columbia, and Refractive Surgery at the University of Southern California.
